Buddhist teachings travelled through teachers, traders, pilgrims, translation and institutions. Movement was gradual and uneven, not a single journey from one centre. Communities adapted languages, art and customs while debating how to preserve teachings. When reading a history, distinguish evidence from later legend. A translated text can reveal both continuity and the choices made to communicate across cultures.
