Buddhism began in South Asia and now has communities across the world. Theravāda has strong historical roots in Sri Lanka and parts of Southeast Asia; Mahāyāna in East Asia; Vajrayāna in Tibet and Himalayan regions, among other places. Migration and exchange make modern communities more varied than a simple map suggests. Language or nationality alone does not tell you how a person practises.
